>> if they're buying and blackmailing members of congress, apparently they failed with harry reid since he's the one that is dismantling the bill that the democratic party said the country needs. i'm for the bloomberg ads because i think they will backfire as much as mitt romney's etch a sketch did. yesterday when bloomberg was interviewed, he said that this was a way for him to educate people and in these red states where i live in south georgia, we don't need the education from michael bloomberg about our guns, rights to guns. most are in favor of some type of backgrund checks. in georgia, to have a carry permit, you have one. the devil is in the details. i'm not confident in eric holder and the department of justice to implement laws, new laws on the books when he won't even enforce the current gun laws on the books. >> so does patrick have something here that mayor bloomberg's reputation as a guy who runs a nanny state or tries to, does he really have any sway over people who are on the fence? >> this is a political red herring. oh, this week it's michael bloomberg and it used to be

we saw that play out this week, when senate majority leader harry reid dropped the assault weapons ban from the senate bill. that's not really a surprise, but it sort of underscores just how divisive this issue continues to be. now in the senate bill, it includes universal background checks as well as stiffer penalties for straw purchases as well as gun trafficking. but it's not clear that that piece of legislation will make its way through senate, or certainly through the house. so this is really tough slogging going forward. so mayor michael bloomberg sort of rolling out what he hopes will be a counterweight to the nra, that $12 million ad campaign, which you mentioned. it's going to air in 13 states, really targeting senators who he believes he might be able to sway to vote yes on this legislation. but, of course, a big question mark there, because you have the nra, you have democrats who live in red states, and of course you have republicans who are not in favor of these stiffer gun control laws. it continues to be a very divisive issue, craig, and really tough to get through both

it's harry reid conceding it can't be part of the main bill. they're trying to focus on what is doable. what can they get done in april? and what they think can get done would be universal background checks, including for private transactions. if i was going to sell you a gun that doesn't have to be any sort of background check on that under a bill being knocked around in the senate, you would have to have some validation there before that purchase could be made. and that's the sticking point right now. that's a far cry from what democrats were talking about two or three months ago. that's a pretty small, narrow provision in the scope of all the big gun controls that democrats wanted to push in the beginning. >> that said, david, ignatius, if a bill passes that even allows the individual transfer without background checks, that would close the gun loophole, also stop something that needs to be stopped, and that is the purchasing of weapons online. that's a significant -- >> for gun control folks. it would just be a shame from my standpoint if i

in the senate, republicans rand paul and ted cruz are threatening to filibuster harry reid's debate on gun control legislation when the senate returns from easter recess. the debate will include votes on universal background checks and a separate push to ban assault weapons. so with all that in mind, mike, there's word the issue of gun legislation could inspire another filibuster even as president obama hits the road to promote change. >> no, that's right. "politico's" john allen got a letter on what the conservatives are going to deliver today. it's ted cruz of texas and mike lee of utah. they saw that the stand with rand filibuster covered the drone issue was so effective it not only gummed up the senate but also got huge street cred for rand paul among conservatives that they are going to try it again. and what they're trying to disarm here, what they're trying to defuse here is an effort to add amendments to this to tighten up the restrictions. so as you said in your set-up, the bill they're going to take up when they come back two weeks from now is going to be mostly about univers
